Name of the Game started during the 2025 season when BYU basketball player, Jared McGregor, realized he wanted to use his platform for something bigger than the game. As the team traveled, he noticed that in every city there were fans facing illness, disability, or loss. What began as a simple desire to help turned into a mission to reach those fans and remind them they are seen and supported.

Working with local religious leaders, Name of the Game identifies kids under 18 who are going through difficult circumstances. Jared and sometimes his teammates meet them in hotel lobbies, homes, or at churches, delivering care packages filled with meaning. Each package includes a personalized BYU jersey, a signed basketball from the entire team, and other thoughtful items, with additional support when specific needs arise.

The goal is simple: create moments of joy and connection during hard seasons. For Jared, this mission is deeply personal. When he was four years old, his father Mark passed away from cancer. Mark was a BYU All American swimmer, and Jared now carries on that legacy by giving back through the game he loves.

Those who want to help can recommend a BYU fan in need or donate to support future care packages on Name of the Game’s website.
